Whatever you do, don`t get into an ice bath if…
❌ You just lifted (and muscle growth is the goal)
Research shows regular cold immersion immediately post-training can blunt muscle hypertrophy and some strength adaptations. Do it before training, the next day, or wait a few hours after.
❌ You`re already running on empty
Cold exposure is a physiological stressor. It triggers an acute inflammatory and stress response. If your nervous system is already overloaded, adding another stressor isn`t recovery it`s friction.
❌ You`re in the second half of your cycle
Progesterone rises then drops sharply in the luteal phase driving fatigue, mood shifts, and heightened sensitivity. Cold can still be useful here, but read your signals. Depleted + strong stressor = a protocol working against you.
❌ It`s within a few hours of bed (for some people)
Cold exposure elevates adrenaline and activates the nervous system. If ice baths leave you feeling alert and wired, using them close to bedtime may be costing you sleep quality.
Cold water therapy is a powerful tool. That`s the difference between a wellness trend and a recovery system.

The moment you hit cold water, your brainstem fires a cascade of noradrenaline. And because dopamine shares the same production pathway, you get the lift and clarity walking out.
That part’s not new. But a 2023 study using fMRI scans found something more interesting: cold water immersion actually changes the connectivity between brain regions involved in emotion, attention, and self-regulation. A structural shift in how those regions talk to each other.
The participants reported feeling more alert, more positive, less distressed. The mood changes tracked directly with those brain changes.

Some places just don`t let you go.
Lily arrived in Manly two years ago with a backpack and no real plan. She walked past our window, saw the intro offer and thought why not?
She came for the recovery and stayed for the people. When life took her elsewhere, she found herself designing a whole new future and realising the one she wanted was already here.
She`s now our Manly Studio Manager and honestly, we couldn`t think of a better person for it.
RCVRI isn`t just a studio, it`s a community that has a way of becoming home.
At RCVRI, we think about recovery in layers.
Your goal sets the foundation. The modalities and frequency that make sense for what you`re working toward.
But there`s a finer layer on top of that. One that shifts day to day.
Your state.
This is where most recovery approaches fall short. They treat every session the same. Same tools, same dose, same order. But the same input on a different day can produce a very different outcome.
We built the Daily State Framework around four states: Good, Flat, Wired, and Depleted. Each one gives you the framework to adjust your session on the day. Same tools. Different dose, different order, different intention.
The framework is simple: read your state first. Then choose.

Your body`s recovery signal and stress signal can`t run at the same time.
Most stress research missed half the population. Women`s stress response appears to be wired more to connection, rather than fight or flight.
But chronic stress keeps cortisol elevated and blocks that recovery from switching on.
Heat and float are two inputs that help shift the nervous system back.

Comfort doesn`t build this.
Two years of cold showers. Ice baths up to an hour, twice a week. A sport picked up late, in a baby pool, watching other people do something that looked impossible.
@victorpineirooz swam 56.3km from the Isle of Man to Northern Ireland in 15° water, 26 hours, no one had ever finished it before.
Jellyfish. Vomiting. Hallucinations. A cliff face at the finish line.
RCVRI was part of how he got there and how he stayed in the water long enough to make history.
We`re honoured to be part of Victor`s story.

Avoiding stress doesn’t make you more resilient.
Most people think recovery is about winding down. But heat and cold work by creating a controlled threat, then letting your body settle from it. Do that enough times and your baseline changes.
Sometimes we exercise to feel good.
And sometimes we exercise with intent. A specific goal, a structured program, a reason behind the work. Strength, fitness, performance… whatever it is, there`s a plan.
Recovery hasn`t caught up yet. It`s still largely something we do because it feels good. Which it does. But there`s a difference between a reset and a system.
A single session in the sauna or ice bath can be a great reset. You walk out feeling better than when you walked in. But when you structure the right tools, at the right frequency, something different starts to happen. Your body doesn`t just feel better. It adapts.
That`s the shift from recovery as a treat to recovery as a system.
Whatever your goal, general health, longevity, athletic performance, stress resilience, there`s now a protocol.

Just make sure it’s 1-3 hours before bed. Not right before you lie down.
See, your body’s natural temperature drop is a sleep signal. Sauna spikes your temp, then forces rapid cooling, which amplifies that signal.
Faster fall asleep.
