Traditional Saunas
Traditional Saunas Sydney
We invite you to experience the profound benefits of traditional sauna therapy at RCVRI. Feel the enveloping warmth, the induced relaxation, and begin your journey towards enhanced health, improved performance, and holistic well-being.
What are Traditional Saunas
Traditional or “wet” saunas have been used for thousands of years for their health benefits. Relax, refresh, and rejuvenate in one of our two oversized, traditional saunas. Water is heated by the stones to warm and humidify the room. Our traditional sauna experience is also supported with an open plan shower for you to cool down during and after your session.
Standard sauna sessions are 30 minutes, including all showering and changing. Bookings are for shared sessions, unless specifically reserved as a private booking. Please bring along a towel to sit on, a small towel to wipe away any sweat, and swimwear to wear during your session. We ask that everyone showers before using the sauna. You may also shower throughout the session if you would like to cool down during the hour. It is recommended to arrive in loose, relaxed clothing. RCVRI provides large and secure change rooms to store your belongings.
Saunas are not recommended for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, those fitted with pacemakers, or those affected by lupus. Please consult your medical practitioner before using the saunas if you suffer from any ailments or are taking any medication. We ask that you do not book a sauna if you have applied fake tan within the last 48 hours.

The Science Behind Traditional Sauna Therapy
The physiological advantages of traditional sauna use are broad and potent. The heat from the sauna causes your heart rate to increase and blood vessels to dilate, creating a cardiovascular workout effect. This improved circulation brings oxygen-rich blood to all corners of your body, aiding in recovery, reducing inflammation, and promoting overall health.
As your body sweats in response to the heat, it also kick-starts the detoxification process. Sweating allows your body to expel toxins, contributing to a healthy immune system, clearer skin, and improved kidney function.
For the performance-minded, regular sauna sessions can aid in muscle recovery and flexibility, reduce post-workout soreness, and improve cardiovascular performance. By adapting to the heat, your body can improve its thermoregulation during intense physical activity, improving endurance.
physiological benefits of contrast therapy are anchored in scientific research. When your body is plunged in hot water, your blood vessels expand, increasing blood flow and transporting heat to the body’s surface. In contrast, when you plunge into cold water, your blood vessels narrow, diverting blood back to your vital organs. This alternating pattern of vasodilation and vasoconstriction works like a pump, flushing out metabolic waste products from your muscles and delivering fresh, oxygen-rich blood.
Beyond Physical: The Psychological Benefits
Traditional sauna therapy also provides a host of psychological benefits. The warmth and relaxation experienced in a sauna can alleviate stress, improve mood, and promote better sleep. Regular sauna use provides a sanctuary for relaxation, offering a respite from daily stresses and fostering a sense of tranquillity and well-being. Regular sauna sessions are a mindful practice. The experience of sitting quietly in the warmth and focusing on your body’s responses encourages mindfulness and self-awareness, promoting mental and physical health.
Traditional Sauna as a Lifestyle Practice
At RCVRI, we view traditional sauna use not as a one-off experience, but as a sustainable lifestyle practice. Regular sessions in our Sydney Studios offer more than momentary relaxation, they create lasting physical and mental wellness outcomes. Through deep, radiant heat, traditional saunas help to reduce stress, enhance circulation, ease muscular tension, and support recovery. Whether you’re seeking better performance, mental clarity, or simply stress relief, developing a routine with us is a positive step toward holistic well-being.
Developing a Consistent Recovery Routine
We encourage our clients to see sauna therapy as part of a larger recovery and wellness framework. A consistent schedule supports cellular repair, boosts the immune system, and provides ongoing mental clarity. Integrating regular sauna sessions into your weekly rhythm helps regulate stress responses, especially in high-performing or high-stress lifestyles. At our Studios, you can access clean, temperature-controlled sauna rooms designed to complement your recovery needs year-round.
Daily vs. Weekly Session
Not all recovery needs are the same. Some clients benefit from daily sauna use, especially when managing chronic tension or frequent physical exertion. Others find a weekly session more sustainable and equally effective. Daily sessions tend to promote cardiovascular endurance, while weekly visits are ideal for stress reduction and general maintenance. We help you determine the right frequency based on your schedule, goals, and physical demands.
Timing Sauna Sessions With Exercise
The timing of sauna use plays a role in how effective the therapy is. Using a traditional sauna post-exercise can help relax tight muscles, promote oxygen flow, and reduce lactic acid build-up. For those with morning workout routines, a sauna session immediately after may boost recovery. Conversely, using the sauna prior to low-impact movement can gently warm muscles and prepare the body. Our staff can recommend sauna timing based on your typical training schedule or recovery plan.
Guidelines for Safe and Effective Use
We’re committed to ensuring every sauna session at RCVRI Sydney is safe and results-driven. Understanding proper usage, from duration to health considerations, helps you get the most out of each visit while minimising risks. Each Studio is equipped with expertly maintained facilities, and our team is available to assist you before, during, or after your session.
Recommended Duration and Temperature Ranges
We recommend traditional sauna sessions of 30 minutes, depending on your tolerance and goals. The ambient temperature generally ranges from 70°C to 90°C—sufficient to trigger therapeutic sweating and circulation without being overwhelming. We advise newcomers to start at the lower end of the scale and gradually increase their exposure as their body adapts. Our Studios are designed with user safety in mind, and we maintain consistent heat environments for optimal benefits.
Precautions for Individuals with Health Conditions
While saunas offer wide-ranging benefits, certain conditions may require medical clearance. Clients with the following should consult a health professional before use:
- Cardiovascular issues
- Respiratory concerns
- Pregnancy
- Recent surgeries
- Acute illness or fever
We also discourage alcohol consumption before a sauna session. Our team is happy to answer any safety-related questions and support you in making informed decisions.
Post-Session Hydration and Cooling
Proper recovery after a sauna session begins with hydration. Sweating naturally leads to fluid loss, so we advise drinking water before and after your visit. It’s also essential to allow your body to cool gradually—whether by sitting in our lounge areas or moving into a cooling therapy. This helps stabilise your internal temperature and allows the body to fully absorb the benefits of the session.
Pairing Saunas With Other RCVRI Sydney Modalities
Our Sydney Studios are designed for multi-modality recovery. Sauna therapy can be combined with several other services, allowing you to create a well-rounded recovery experience. Whether you’re managing a post-workout routine or aiming for mental and physical reset, we’ll help you develop a strategy that fits your lifestyle.
Contrast Therapy
Combining sauna sessions with cold exposure is one of the most effective methods of contrast therapy. The heat stimulates circulation and muscle relaxation, while the cold plunge helps reduce inflammation and tighten blood vessels. This alternating exposure boosts lymphatic movement and speeds up recovery. Many of our clients report feeling energised, relaxed, and less sore after a combined session.
Sauna Before or After Normatec Compression
Using the sauna before a Normatec compression session helps prime the body by increasing circulation and loosening muscle fibres. Conversely, finishing with Normatec after sauna therapy reinforces fluid movement and aids in waste removal. We offer both sequencing options and help guide you toward the best order based on your activity level, training schedule, or general recovery needs.
Incorporating Into a Weekly Recovery Plan
Our goal is to make advanced recovery accessible and manageable. Many clients create weekly routines that include sauna therapy, compression boots, and float sessions. Whether you’re an athlete preparing for an event or a professional managing daily stress, we help you build a plan that fits into your lifestyle. With Studios located in Coogee, Cronulla, Manly, Martin Place, and Sydney’s CBD, you’re never far from your next session.
